Backstrom, 20, already has represented Sweden in two World Championships and two World Junior Championships, and was the leading scorer for Brynas in the Swedish Elite League each of the past two seasons.
He scored his first NHL goal against Ottawa's Ray Emery on October 8 in a 4-1 Capitals win and later captured NHL Rookie of the Month honors for December, leading all rookies with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 13 games. The Capitals posted their best month on a points percentage basis since February 2001 (7-3-3).
He is a natural center but has spent time playing left wing this season.
