ALASKAN HAS RANGERS FIRED UP Staff writers in the Alaska Daily News, "When the New York Rangers decided to keep Anchorage center Brandon Dubinsky on the roster after training camp, they weren't sure where he'd fit in. But after a dozen games Rangers coach Tom Renney inserted rookie center Dubinsky between Jagr and Marcel Hossa. Since then, the Rangers have gone 4-1 and moved into second place in the Atlantic Division. Dubinsky, 21, has a nice package of skills to go with a fiery disposition, according to McGourty. He's winning faceoffs at a 52-percent rate. He skates well and makes good passes." |
DUBINSKY'S STRONG PLAY GETTING JAGR ON TRACK John McGourty writes on NHL.com, "Brandon Dubinsky has a nice package of skills to go with a fiery disposition and a burning desire to win. He's beating opposing veterans on faceoffs at a 52-percent rate. Rangers management expected either Drury or Gomez, or both, would be a good fit with Jagr, a five-time NHL scoring champion. But it became apparent during training camp that neither Drury nor Gomez, despite their considerable skills, was a natural match for Jagr. And it still was apparent after a dozen games. That's when coach Tom Renney inserted rookie center Brandon Dubinsky between Jagr and Marcel Hossa. Since then, the Rangers have gone 4-1 and moved into second place in the Atlantic Division." |
DUBINSKY HITS CENTER STAGE John Dellapina writes in the New York Daily News, "Because he is the kind of coach who leaves nothing to chance, Tom Renney had the conversation with Brandon Dubinsky Saturday morning. Because of who Dubinsky is, the conversation wasn't all that necessary. And that was why Renney tabbed the confident rookie in the first place to do the daunting job of centering Jaromir Jagr's line Saturday night against the Devils. "(Saturday) morning, I just came in and Tom had the lines on the board," Dubinsky said of arriving at the practice facility in Greenburgh to see (Marcel) Hossa-Dubinsky-Jagr written on the dry erase board. "And he just had a little talk with me, obviously, about playing my game and getting Jags the puck when he was open, but not forcing anything." |
DUBINSKY IMPRESSING RANGERS Sam Weinman writes in The Journal News, "The best measure of Brandon Dubinsky's tenuous hold on an NHL job is that he still lives out of a hotel room in Westchester. If the Rangers were unhappy with what they've seen out of the rookie center a dozen games into the season, the 21-year-old Dubinsky could check out at a moment's notice. By almost all accounts that won't be necessary. Even on a team that faces some inevitable personnel challenges once injured forwards Martin Straka and Ryan Callahan return over the next month, Dubinsky's steady progress in the early weeks of the season has made him close to indispensable. Still without an NHL goal to his name, the Anchorage, Alaska, native has nonetheless been a threat in every game he's played, and on Thursday night, he came just inches away from beating Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig for a highlight-worthy goal. As with plenty of his teammates these days, Dubinsky is just waiting for the breaks to go his way." |
