VOKOUN LONE ALL-STAR PICK FOR PANTHERS Brian Biggane writes in the Palm Beach Post, "The selection of goaltender Tomas Vokoun as the Panthers' representative in the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 27 in Atlanta is vindication of Vokoun's level of play after a slow start. But it's also vindication for the trade coach and General Manager Jacques Martin made last summer, dealing three high draft picks to acquire Vokoun from the Nashville Predators. Vokoun became the third Panthers goaltender selected for the game, joining John Vanbiesbrouck (1994, ‘96 and ‘97) and Roberto Luongo (2004)." |
IN THE ZONE Dave Joseph writes for the Florida Panthers, "The Panthers pulled into Detroit late Friday afternoon accompanied by the hottest goaltender in the league. Yes, Tomas Vokoun is in a zone. Vokoun, who helped the Panthers kick off this four-game road trip Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over the Blues, has been spectacular in his last three starts. In fact, since being pulled Dec. 5 against the Senators after allowing two goals on his first five shots, Vokoun has carried the Panthers. Vokoun's numbers the past three games: He's allowed only one goal in regulation, has stopped 91 of 92 shots, and has recorded two of his three shutouts." |
WITHOUT FANFARE, VOKOUN HAS TOUCHED LIVES OF YOUNG CANCER PATIENTS Steve Gorten writes in the South Florida Sun Sentinel, "Vokoun's still settling in with the Panthers but says he wants to make a similar impact in South Florida. Alaina Miller, executive director of the Florida Panthers Foundation, said Vokoun will start by hosting about six suite nights the rest of this season and is looking to work with Embrace Life Children's Foundation, Connor Moran Children's Cancer Foundation and Jessica June Children's Cancer Foundation, among others. "That's something that's important to him," said former Predators teammate Chris Mason, who has known Vokoun for nine years. "He's got such a big heart." Vokoun loves Harley-Davidson motorcycles and fast cars, and Panthers backup goalie Craig Anderson jokingly calls him an "adrenaline junkie." But he's also a dad who plays Barbies with his two daughters (ages 7 and 1) and rings teammate Olli Jokinen's doorbell at 8:30 a.m. asking if Jokinen's daughters want to ride bikes with his girls." |
