HORCOFF STICKS WITH PLAN TO IMPROVE OFFENSE Larry Wigge writes on NHL.com, "We've all heard of golfers trying countless club models until they find the right one – the one with the right lie, the right loft, the right shaft, and most important, the right feel. Edmonton Oilers center Shawn Horcoff doesn't admit to working on his golf game to that extent last summer, but he did go the extra mile with the hockey sticks he couldn't seem to find comfort with. "I must have tried 11 different kinds of sticks last season," Horcoff said. "One was too whippy. Another was too stiff. I had the wrong sticks all year. I wasn't happy with anything. Finally, the stick rep told me to go to the plant so I could work with the head guy right there. I thought, ‘Why not?'" |
HORCOFF SILENCING THE DOUBTERS Robin Brownlee with The Canadian Press writes, "He gets no respect, just results. Shawn Horcoff has been a whipping boy for some fans of the Oilers long enough it's difficult to tell the fresh welts from the old ones. Seven seasons into his tenure with the Oilers, the longest-standing rebuke by critics on fan websites and in the rink is the broad-brushed criticism Horcoff isn't a "legitimate" No. 1 centre. In terms of marquee value, there's no question Horcoff isn't Joe Sakic, Saku Koivu or Scott Gomez. It just so happens, though, Horcoff is tied with or ahead of all three in scoring." |
HORCOFF DESERVING OF ALL-STAR ACCOLADE Dan Barnes writes in the Edmonton Journal, "The Edmonton Oilers didn't exactly envision a star beside Shawn Horcoff's name this season. In fact, last summer they were more likely to affix an asterisk to his future at the top of their depth chart. And isn't that just typical of Horcoff's consistently uphill struggle for recognition in this city? ... In typical Horcoff style, the hard-nosed kid from Castlegar, B.C., kept outworking teammates and opponents through half a season and finally made it impossible for the National Hockey League and/or GM Kevin Lowe to select anybody else as the Oilers' all-star representative." |
