Scott GOMEZ (GOH-mehz, SKAWT) New York Rangers

New Jersey's 2nd choice, 27th overall, in 1998 Entry Draft.
2007-08 Statistics as of Jan. 24/08: 51 GP – 11 G – 36 A – 47 Pts. – 20 PIM
At his only other All-Star appearance in 2000, Gomez kept a special souvenir – a Raymond Bourque stick. Bourque helped ease the then NHL rookie's jitters. Bourque: "When I started I came to these games, (and) there were guys that I grew up watching that were my idols. You kinda just watch how they go about their business and any little thing that they tell you, you're like, 'Wow. He spoke to me.' It's pretty neat. I've been there. So I know when certain young guys come around, you just make sure you go say your two cents and make them feel comfortable. Because you come to these games and it can be pretty intimidating the first time, so just make them feel comfortable and make sure that they're having fun."

Gomez finished last in the Fastest Skater event in 2000 but had a good excuse. Gomez: "I thought it was a joke when I saw my name up on the board. All I kept thinking about was (Devils teammate) Randy McKay." McKay had told Gomez prior to All-Star the one thing he shouldn't do is the fastest skater competition, saying that he might fall. A bad omen of things to come.

Gomez looked around the interview room at the 2000 All-Star Game and said he was in "hockey heaven".
