Marian HOSSA (HOH-sa, MAIR-ee-uhn) Atlanta Thrashers
HOSSA HAPPILY SURPRISED BY ALL-STAR SELECTION
Craig Custance writes in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "Things are starting to even out when it comes to the Thrashers and the upcoming All-Star game. Some fans were disappointed that Ilya Kovalchuk wasn't voted in as a starter, despite leading the league in goals. But maybe news that the Thrashers will have two representatives instead of the assumed one will help ease the pain. Thrashers forward Marian Hossa will join Kovalchuk as reserves for the Eastern Conference during the NHL's All-Star game on Jan. 27 at Philips Arena."
HOSSA BOYS' PASSION FOR HOCKEY GOES FROM SLOVAKIA TO NHL
Steve Hummer writes in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "In the childhood House of Hossa – actually a small apartment in the Slovakian city of Trencin – hockey was nothing less than the culture from which two brothers sprung ... Back then, it could be crowded, the two boys sharing one cluttered bedroom. It could be contentious, Marian, 28, the big brother by nearly three years, engaging in the usual sibling hazing ... Out of the young rabble, the Hossa boys emerged as something special. They had the direction – father Frantisek one day would coach them both on the national and Olympic team. They had the native talent – Marian playing professionally in Slovakia at 17, drafted by Ottawa of the NHL at 18. Marcel was not as noted a goal scorer, but still was drafted in the first round in 2000 by Montreal. Always preceding his younger brother, Marian plowed the path for Marcel. The younger brother found it sometimes difficult to keep up. But at least there always was someone to call."
