With his first night off from a start this season (Jan. 13 at Anaheim) Nabokov's consecutive start-streak ended at 43 games. His mark fell one start short of the mark for most consecutive regular-season starts since 1989-90 (Martin Brodeur, 44). Nabokov started every game this season (beginning October 4, 2007) and had started 51 consecutive games dating back to March 24, 2007 before getting the night off in Anaheim.
Recorded his 38th career shutout on December 7, 2008. His 38 shutouts since 2000-01 ranks second in the League behind Martin Brodeur's 54.
On March 10, 2002 Nabokov became the first goaltender in Sharks history and the seventh in NHL history to score a goal in a regular season game. The goal was the first ever by a European-born goaltender and the first scored on the power-play. The goal came on an empty net (19:12 of the third period) in a 7-4 San Jose win at Vancouver.
In 1994, when the San Jose Sharks selected Nabokov with their ninth-round pick, 219th overall, in the NHL Entry Draft, they had never seen him play in person or on tape.
Nabokov's father, Viktor, was also a goaltender. He played 18 seasons in Russia and Kazakhstan.
