Ovechkin signed the second-longest contract in NHL history when he inked a 13-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals, worth $124 million, on Jan. 10.

Following his 46-goal sophomore NHL campaign in 2006-07, Ovechkin became the first player to earn First All-Star Team honors in each of his first two full seasons since Detroit Red Wings goaltender Terry Sawchuk in 1950-51 and 1951-52. He also led all players in shots for the second consecutive season with 392, easily outdistancing second-place Olli Jokinen of the Florida Panthers (351).

In 2005-06, Ovechkin outdistanced Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby in voting for the Calder Trophy as the League's top rookie and became the second rookie in history to tally 50 goals and 100 points in a season (52-54–106), following Winnipeg's Teemu Selanne in 1992-93.

Ovechkin tallied his 100th career NHL goal Oct. 12 against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in his 167th game, becoming the fourth-fastest to reach the milestone since 1990. The only players faster were Teemu Selanne (130 games), Eric Lindros (152) and Pavel Bure (154).
